Manuscript Critiques

Each manuscript critique is a detailed, written evaluation focusing on substantive elements – plot, character, pacing, etc.  – with suggestions for revising. Writers are welcome to request specific areas of concern they want emphasized in the report. The critique is at least three pages, usually more, depending on the amount of work required. The critique also includes a list of minor points and details. If requested by the author, awkward wording, typos and repetitions can be flagged in the actual manuscript. Critiques are sent by email within 30 days. A rush service can be arranged for authors with time sensitive material.

Query and Synopsis Critiques

Query letters are selling tools. The focus of the evaluation will be on impact, clarity and choosing key phrases that will make an editor or agent say yes to your manuscript.

A synopsis critique focuses on clarity. It’s important that an editor or agent isn’t left with unanswered questions about your story. Emphasis will also be on how well the overall mood, tone and style of the manuscript is conveyed in the synopsis.

Revised Manuscript Critiques

Valerie will reread material that has been revised based on her original critique at a reduced fee. The critique will include further suggestions for revision – if required – and a focus on fine tuning and polishing of the material. If requested by the author, awkward wording, typos and repetitions will be flagged in the actual manuscript.

Telephone Consultations

Telephone appointments are available to discuss your manuscript critique. These sessions can offer creative, insightful additions to the written report. Brainstorm revisions, talk about marketing or discuss ideas for your next novel.

Writers who have not used the critique service are also welcome to book a consultation for general advice on their writing career, to talk about manuscripts, story ideas, works in progress -- or even to practice “pitching an editor.” The time is yours!

All telephone consultations are booked in advance for a time and date agreed upon by Valerie and the author. Valerie makes the call so there are no long distance charges to the author.
